Pick of the Week - Flavour Fall Plums
“As we move on through Autumn peaches and nectarines are finished, leaving just plums which are in my opinion, the most underrated of all the stone fruits we sell. Lots of people don’t get to enjoy them as the early plums often disappoint; they don’t quite eat as well as the later varieties and especially when they are presented, in most retailers, far too green.
We are now near the very end of the plum season, and the last good plum of the year is now in-store; the Flavour Fall variety. I recommend you leave them out of your fridge until they are ready to go, which is when they are soft.
The Flavour Falls grown in Western Australia are by far the best eating of this variety, and of course, therefore, command a price premium especially now as fuel surcharges are adding to the costs of getting the fruit here. The crop is top quality this year and we are able to offer a fantastic special.
Enjoy this last offering of the stone fruit season. We probably have a fortnight of these to go and then it’s only the tail end of the grapes until the USA cherries are in, which the early crops have been obliterated by rain.”

In Veg
“As with fruit, there are plenty of good options available this week. Imperfect tomatoes are about as cheap as they get.
Loose red washed potatoes are top value and a great potato for every type of cooking. Corn continues to be an absolute bargain and eating superbly, bargains abound with Telegraph cucumbers, fennel and green caps are all great value.
Broccoli and caulies continue to be well supplied and twin pack Cos lettuce and imperfect Kumera are all great for the budget. Happy shopping everyone!”

In Fruit
“As we get to the end of our stone fruit season, there are two stand outs for good quality; both great value items. All our stores have good quality West Australian Flavour Fall plums on a great special this week. This is our last plum for the season. It’s a very good eating plum and considering the increased costs of getting a truck across the Nullarbor these days, they are cheap.
Red grapes are also very inexpensive. The berries are a bit pale and a bit small. However, they are fantastic to eat and very inexpensive. With pears, we have finished Williams for the year and are commencing Packhams. This fruit is much slower to ripen than the Williams so be prepared to buy ahead and leave out of the fridge to ripen for a few days or possibly more.
Mandarins and watermelon continue to be a bargain. Green kiwi is easing and will soon be the same price as Gold, which to me are just fantastic eating.
Apples are all at their best, it’s hard to go past our imperfect Pink Lady offer to help stretch the family budget. We had great success with Fuyu fruit last weekend and have found a very good line to sell as imperfects at around half the price they were a week ago.
In berries, we hope to have raspberries on special for this weekend.”
